Kano govt urges residents to obtain permits before erecting buildings

The Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority has urged residents to obtain building permits before construction to prevent building collapse and protect lives and property.
KNUPDA’s acting boss, Nura Maude, said this in a statement on Tuesday.
“Building collapse results in loss of lives, injuries and destruction of property. ”Building permits will ensure that proper structures comply with approved planning, structural and environmental standards,” Mr Maude said.
He warned that failure to comply with approved standards could expose property owners, occupants and neighbouring communities to serious risks and financial loss.
Mr Maude advised property owners and developers to engage qualified professionals, obtain necessary approvals, and ensure construction works strictly follow plans and building regulations.
He also urged contractors and developers to avoid cutting corners and use appropriate building materials to ensure safety and durability of structures.
Mr Maude expressed sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives in the building collapse and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured.
He also urged residents to report unsafe construction activities to relevant authorities.
Mr Maude said that KNUPDA remained committed to promoting safe, orderly and sustainable urban development across the state.
