Kano: Man gets jail term, 20 strokes of cane for motorcycle theft

A Shari’a Court in Kano State on Friday sentenced a man, Muhammad Yahaya, to 16 months’ imprisonment and 20 strokes of cane for stealing a motorcycle.
Mr Yahaya, who lives in Dorayi Quarters Kano, was convicted of criminal conspiracy, trespass and theft.
The judge, Nura Yusuf-Ahmad, ordered Mr Yahaya to pay a fine of N30,000 for conspiracy.
He also ordered the convict to pay a N10,000 fine for theft.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Aliyu Abideen, told the court that one Yusuf Abdullahi, who lives in Sani Mainagge Quarters Kano, reported the matter at the Dorayi Babba Police Division Kano on February 3.
He said the convict and one Ibrahim Hassan, at large, used a master key and stole the complainant’s red Bajaj motorcycle parked at Bayero University Kano’s old campus.
Mr Abideen said the convict was arrested while trying to escape with the motorcycle.
The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.
Mr Abideen said the offence contravened sections 120, 216 and 133 of the Kano State Sharia Penal Code.
