The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State command, has arrested two persons for allegedly attempting to smuggle Indian hemp and other illicit drugs to inmates at the Nomansland Court Complex, Kano.

This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Kano by the Kano command’s  spokesman, CSC Musbahu Lawan-Kofarnasarawa.

He said the suspects, Usman Khalid, 25, and Bello Musa Ahmed, 24, both residents of Tsamiya (Brigade) area of the state, were apprehended by officers of the service attached to the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Goron Dutse.

According to him, the suspects were arrested while allegedly trying to throw Indian hemp and other illicit substances to inmates at the court premises.

The statement quoted the Controller of Corrections in the state, Ado Inuwa, as warning members of the public against intermingling with inmates, especially during transportation to and from court, describing such acts as a serious security breach punishable under the law.

He reaffirmed the service’s commitment to the rehabilitation and reformation of inmates, stressing that the Service would not tolerate any attempt to undermine its mandate.

Mr Inuwa directed the lommand’s legal and intelligence units to hand over the suspects and the seized substances to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and prosecution.

The command also reiterated its resolve to maintain maximum security and zero-tolerance stance on drug-related activities within custodial facilities and court premises across the state.

He also urged the public to cooperate with security agencies to sustain law and order in the state.
