The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kano says it received 106 complaints bordering on human rights abuses in November.

Shehu Abdullahi, the state NHRC coordinator, said this in an interview on Friday in Kano.

He said 81 of the 106 cases had been treated, while 25 were still pending.

Mr Abdullahi said that 42 out of the cases bordered on women and gender matters, while 25 had to do with family abandonment.

He said the remaining 19 were on children’s rights, including education, health and welfare.

“Fifteen of the cases received in the period under review are issues of labour matters and entitlement of workers.

“The remaining five cases are on abuse of rights, which include civil and political rights, among others.

“At the international level, the United Nations has set aside 16 days of activism, from November 25 to December 10 every year, to eliminate and minimise violence against women and girls in our society.

“Women and girls are more prone and vulnerable to violence in society,” he said.

Mr Abdullahi said NHRC would collaborate with stakeholders to eliminate sexual and gender-based violence against women and girls.

He added that NHRC was working on plans to pay advocacy visits to policymakers, detention facilities, and secondary and tertiary institutions to promote the rights of women and girls.

Mr Abdullahi said the stakeholders included state executives, legislatures, judiciary and police.
