The Kano Grand Kadi, Tijjani Ibrahim-Yakasai, has set up a committee to review the case of a long-term convict awaiting amputation for 18 years in custody.

Mr Ibrahim-Yakasai also granted bail to 147 offenders with minor offences in two prisons in Kano.

On Monday, this was disclosed in a statement by the Nigerian Correctional Service Kano command’s spokesman, SC Musbahu Kofar-Nasarawa.

He said the decision was to decongest and free those languishing in the Kano prisons.

According to him, the committee comprises six judges headed by an Upper Sharia Court judge, Ibrahim Sarki-Yola.

“A Kano Shari’a Court had earlier ordered the amputation of a convict’s left leg and right hand in its judgment for committing theft,” said Mr Ibrahim-Yakasai. “The committee will review the case for staying 18 years in Kano Correctional Centre without executing the sentence.”

Mr Ibrahim-Yakasai urged the released inmates to behave well and shun any misconduct that may lead to recalling them to prison.

On his part, the Kano command prison controller, Suleiman Mohammed-Inuwa, thanked the grand Kadi for decongesting the facilities.
