Kano tricycle riders support govt’s waste bin reintroduction

Tricycle riders and passengers in Kano have backed the state government’s move to reintroduce waste bins on tricycles to improve sanitation.
The chairman of the Tricycle Riders Association, Sani Saidu-DanKoli, disclosed this in an interview in Kano on Thursday.
He said, “The association fully supports the initiative, because the bins will help passengers dispose of bottles and snack wrappers properly.
“Indiscriminate dumping has damaged the city’s aesthetics. It has also caused persistent drainage blockages across the metropolis.
“Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf’s administration is providing the bins. They will be sold to members at an affordable rate.”
A cross-section of riders interviewed also welcomed the policy.
Abubakar Muhammad, a rider, said the bins would reduce clashes with task force officials.
“Littering passengers often trigger such confrontations,” he explained.
Another rider, Sulaiman Murtala, who described the idea as excellent, said the bins must be durable.
“They should not become a maintenance burden for riders. We urge the government to create a clear evacuation plan.
“Collected waste must be emptied from the bins on time,” he suggested.
A passenger, A’isha Bello, also commended the plan, describing it as a vital step to improve public health.
Ms Bello suggested establishing larger collection points at the motor park and other strategic locations.
A student, Yusuf Aminu, explained that sensitisation is important, hence the need for continuous public awareness to ensure high compliance.
