Kano: Woman arrested for allegedly attempting to burn co-wife alive

The Kano State police command has arrested Maryam Usman for allegedly setting fire to her co-wife’s room in the Mangwarori Quarters area of Mariri, Kano State.
The command’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday.
“On 12th May, 2026, at about 0040hrs, the Command received a distress report indicating that one Maryam Usman, 32, allegedly set fire to the room occupied by her co-wife, Firdausi Saminu, 40.
“As a result of the fire, the following persons sustained varying degrees of burns: Firdausi Saminu, 40, co-wife; Isma’il Saminu, 3, child; Khadija Saminu, 5, child; and Saminu Miko, husband,” the statement said.
Mr Haruna said the victims, including two children, are currently receiving treatment at Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital.
He added that patrol teams responded swiftly to the scene, while the suspect was arrested and taken into custody at the Mariri Police Division.
According to him, exhibits were recovered from the scene, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident have commenced.
“The suspect is in custody while an investigation into the case of alleged arson and attempted culpable homicide is ongoing,” he said.
