The Nigeria Police Force in Katsina State has launched a Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) aimed at tackling violent crimes and strengthening public confidence in security operations across the state.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ali Umar-Fage, inaugurated the unit on Friday in Katsina, describing it as a strategic step toward improving operational efficiency, accountability and professionalism within the command.

Mr Umar-Fage said the establishment of the VCRU was part of ongoing reforms by the police leadership to reorganise and strengthen the operational structure of the force in addressing emerging security threats.

According to him, the specialised unit is designed to respond swiftly and effectively to crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry and unlawful possession of firearms.

He explained that the inauguration of the unit was timely and necessary in view of the prevailing security challenges confronting parts of the country.

“The establishment of the VCRU is aimed at enhancing the security architecture of the state while also improving public trust and confidence in policing,” he said.

The commissioner noted that officers deployed to the unit were carefully selected based on competence, discipline, experience, commitment and integrity.

He added that the personnel had undergone rigorous training to equip them with the necessary skills to discharge their duties professionally and within the ambit of the law.

Mr Umar-Fage stressed that the unit would operate in compliance with the Constitution and with due respect for the fundamental human rights of citizens.

The police commissioner also announced the constitution of a civilian oversight board to monitor the activities and community impact of the VCRU.

He said the board comprises representatives of traditional institutions, civil society organisations, the Nigerian Bar Association, the National Human Rights Commission, the Police Community Relations Committee, trade unions, youth groups and other relevant stakeholders.

According to him, the board is expected to promote transparency, strengthen accountability and ensure that the unit operates in line with professional standards.

Mr Umar-Fage expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for what he described as visionary leadership and strategic reforms aimed at repositioning the force for effective service delivery.

He also commended officers and men of the Katsina State Police Command for their resilience, sacrifice and dedication to duty in safeguarding lives and property.

The commissioner urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information, noting that security remains a collective responsibility.

He charged personnel of the VCRU to remain disciplined, courageous and committed in the discharge of their responsibilities.
