The Katsina team that represented Nigeria at the International Debate Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has emerged winner of the competition after beating the host Malaysian team.

The Katsina team secured the ticket to represent Nigeria after becoming runners-up at the 2021 Presidential Inter-Schools debate championship in Lagos.

Aminu Badaru, the spokesperson for Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

He said the debate focused on current affairs, especially the Russia-Ukraine war, public-private schools and two-party-multi-party government systems.

The championship was held between September 14 and 22.

Mr Badaru said six Junior Secondary School students from Katsina represented Nigeria at the competition. Four of them were females. He said Lawal Buhari-Daura, SUBEB Executive Chairman, who led the team, described theIR performance as wonderful.

“Buhari-Daura also said that winning the trophy by the team was a clear testimony of the commitment of Governor Aminu Masari’s resolve to resuscitate the lost glory of education in the state,” said the statement.

He assured the Presidential Schools Debate of Nigeria (PSDN) that the Katsina team would continue to make the state and the country proud in future competitions.

Mr Buhari-Daura commended the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for its support of the development of basic education in Katsina.
