Keir Starmer prepares resignation as UK prime minister Monday

Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, is set to resign by Monday, following Andy Burnham’s triumphant return to Westminster in the Makerfield by-election.
Citing sources within Mr Starmer’s Labour Party, the British Observer newspaper reported that the UK Prime Minister could quit his position on Monday.
“The prime minister is understood to have reached the conclusion that his position is no longer tenable after conversations in recent days with cabinet ministers, Downing Street advisers, trade union leaders, and party donors,” the report stated.
It added, “Although Starmer is spending the weekend talking his future over with his wife, Victoria, at Chequers before making a final decision, senior Labour figures believe a “clear statement” could come as early as Monday.”
This comes amid clamour for Mr Starmer to step aside from his party leadership as his popularity continues to dwindle.
After leading the Labour Party to a landslide electoral victory that ousted the Conservative Party from power in 2024, Mr Starmer’s popularity has badly plummeted as his party continues to suffer losses in other elections.
Mr Starmer’s resignation would bring the number of UK prime ministers to seven in over a decade, reflecting frequent and significant turnover in leadership, sparked by continued dissatisfaction among the public over their performance.
