The Kenyan community in Australia has been thrown into mourning following the death of a young woman, Sheila Jepkorir Chebii, just over a month after arriving in the country.

Reports stated that Ms Chebii left Kenya for Australia in search of a better life on April 5, 2026, but her family were left devastated after she suddenly passed away in Sydney on Sunday.

A Facebook user, Anastacia Chepkoech, who described the deceased as her “dear sister” posted about the incident on Tuesday. 

She stated, “Rest in peace my dear sister. Just a month ago, you left Kenya to pursue your dreams and further your studies abroad, never knowing that would be our last goodbye. 

“Your absence is painful beyond words, but your dreams, kindness, and beautiful memories will forever live in our hearts. May God grant you eternal peace and give us strength to carry this loss. You will always be loved and never forgotten.”

The cause of Ms Chebii’s death was unknown as of press time.

The Peoples Gazette learnt that Ms Chebii hailed from Kimumu, a low and middle class settlement in Eldoret and relocated to Australia to start afresh before her demise. 

Ms Chebii’s death has sent shockwaves among Kenyans, especially those in the diaspora, who can relate to the pursuit of dreams overseas. Many have also taken to social media to share their condolence messages. 

“As a parent and more so a mother, I feel the pain. True solace to the family and friends of the young girl. It is indeed sad and heartbreaking,” a Facebook user, Wakintu Kintu, stated.

Another user, Lucky Luciano, said, “Very heart breaking, sincere condolences from me and my family, Godspeed to family and friends, now you wonder what if this beautiful soul remained in Kenya.”

“Barely a month leaves behind a load of questions. I can’t imagine you have left too soon. Shine with angels Sister Jepkor,” one Facebook user, Lagat Rutto, who identified herself as the victim’s cousin said.

Also, another commenter, David Kipkemboi, stated, “My condolences to the family during this difficult time of mourning, may the Lord grant you strength to overcome this painfulness, RIP Sheila.”
