Reality TV star Kim Kardashian has helped fly female Afghan footballers to the UK amid the Taliban takeover and implementation of strict Islamic laws.

Kardashian chartered a plane to transport over 130 teenage Afghan players and their families that landed at the Stansted Airport on November 17.

The founder of the non-profit US group Tzedek Association, Rabbi Moshe Margaretten, who has worked with the celebrity on criminal justice reform in the US, reached out to her to pay for a chartered plane to the UK.

“Maybe an hour later, after the Zoom call, I got a text message that Kim wants to fund the entire flight,” VOA quoted Margaretten to have said.

Many Afghans, athletes, activists, entertainers, among others, have fled their country, fearing for their lives as the autocratic Islamic Taliban known for its flagrant disregard for the rule of law and discrimination against women and girls took over the reins of power after the Afghanistan government abdicated the seat of power.

“Many of those families left their houses when the Taliban took over. Their houses were burnt down, Some of their family members were killed or taken by Taliban. So the danger and the stress was very high, and that’s why it was very important to move fast to get them outside Afghanistan,” said ex-captain of Afghanistan’s national women’s team Khalida Popal stated.

The team have now arrived and will spend 10 days in quarantine.

English Premier League club Leeds United have also offered to support the players.
