King Charles and his wife Queen Camilla emerged from the Tardis as part of Thursday’s opening ceremony for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games that will feature 74 countries and territories.

The royal couple were cheered by the crowd inside the Hydro Arena before making their way to their seats to observe the ceremony, which featured flags of all the participating nations as well as musical performances from Nathan Evans, Tom Walker and KT Tunstall.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney and First Minister of Wales Rhun ap Iorwerth were also present for the show that lasted over two hours.

A total of 215 medals are up for grabs across 10 sports at this year’s Commonwealth Games. Glasgow is hosting the competition for the second time since 2014 after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out of staging this edition due to soaring costs.

Meanwhile, 72 athletes (34 men and 38 women) are set to represent Nigeria across 10 Sports at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Some of the big names set to feature for Team Nigeria include women’s 100 metres gold medal favourite and world record holder Tobi Amusan and in-form men’s 100 metres specialist Ajayi Kanyinsola.

Rosemary Chukwuma, Patience Okon George, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, and Samuel Ogazi are some of the other notable names.
