King Charles will, during a two-day official visit, declare open the new session of the Canadian Parliament, ushering in the government of newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney.

As King of Canada and the country’s official head of state, Mr Charles was invited by Mr Carney to open the new parliamentary session on May 27.

The monarch will deliver his speech from the throne in Canada to officially open the new Parliament, just as his mother did twice during her 70-year reign.

Queen Elizabeth, King Charles’s mother, declared open Parliament in 1957. Two decades later, in 1977—marking her Silver Jubilee—she read a speech to open the third session of Canada’s 30th Parliament.

Though Mr Charles will be visiting Canada for the 20th time, this will be his first since being crowned King in 2022. It marks a historic moment the country eagerly anticipates.

The king’s visit is seen as a show of support for the country, as Canada continues to foster strong international relations with the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth nations.
