The Kogi Ministry of Health, in partnership with Sightsavers, has provided free hydrocele surgeries for 40 indigent patients to eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases.

The programme was coordinated by Albert Alabi, an NTD control coordinator, through the State Hospital Management Board, led by Ayo Olayemi.

Speaking on Wednesday in Idah, Mr Olayemi said the intervention was part of wider efforts to eliminate NTDs. He explained that the initiative demonstrated the state government’s and Sightsavers’ commitment to improving the health and well-being of residents.

Mr Alabi described hydrocele as a complication of lymphatic filariasis, which affects the scrotum, causing swelling, pain, and social exclusion.

“It is a painful and stigmatising condition caused by lymphatic filariasis. A total of 40 patients received free surgeries at zonal hospitals in Idah, Kabba, and Okene, restoring dignity and hope,” Mr Alabi said.

He added that many sufferers remain untreated due to stigma and poor access to healthcare services.

Mr Alabi revealed that the intervention was supported by Governor Ahmed Ododo and funded by the Reaching the Last Mile and Eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis in Africa projects.

He noted that between 2018 and 2025, 234 patients had benefited from free hydrocele surgeries funded by donor partners through Sightsavers. He praised the governor for prioritising quality healthcare delivery, which has provided relief to many beneficiaries.

Mr Alabi stressed that NTDs, including lymphatic filariasis, are preventable with timely interventions, emphasising the need for increased public awareness.

“This initiative highlights the importance of collaboration between government and partners in tackling NTDs and improving community health outcomes. The Ministry and Sightsavers have collaborated since 2010 through annual distribution of Mectizan and Albendazole,” Mr Alabi said.

Phoebe Hindan, Kogi Sightsavers programme officer, said the organisation is supporting the state in managing morbidities linked to lymphatic filariasis.

“Sightsavers is committed to promoting equal participation of persons with disabilities in society. Through its RLM and ELFA initiatives, Sightsavers funded 40 hydrocele surgeries in Kogi in 2025,” she said.

She explained that managing this disability is crucial to achieving the overall elimination of the disease in the state. She also stressed the need for awareness campaigns to counter myths around hydrocele and encourage more patients to seek treatment.

“Sightsavers’ efforts in Kogi aim to eliminate the disease and improve the well-being of persons with disabilities,” Ms Hindan added.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the state government, Sightsavers, and partners for the life-changing intervention.

“I was ashamed to be seen in public, but now I walk freely without ridicule. I thank the doctors and everyone involved,” said John Adebayo from Kabba.

“This surgery has restored my dignity and confidence. I’m thankful for the free treatment and the medical team’s care,” said Aliyu Jimoh from Idah.
