Kwara assembly suspends lawmaker for contempt, breach of privilege

The Kwara State House of Assembly, on Thursday, announced the suspension of Saba Gideon, the member representing Edu State Constituency, over contempt and abuse of privilege.
Mr Gideon was suspended for three months after he was found to have recorded a closed‑door meeting and shared the audio with an unauthorised person.
The legislator confessed to committing the alleged offence during heated debates at the plenary on Thursday.
While moving a motion, the leader of the House, Abdulkadir Magaji, cited Order 4, Rule 14 of the House’s privileges rules and Section 14(2) of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act 2017.
Several legislators, including Ganiyu Salaudeen, representing the Omupo State Constituency; Musa Kareem, representing the Patigi State Constituency; Owolabi Rasaq of the Shaare Oke Ode Constituency; Abdullahi Danbaba of the Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe Constituency; and Oniboki Yunusa of the Afon Constituency, contributed to the debates on the matter.
The assembly resolved that the unauthorised recording “is capable of bringing the legislative institution to disrepute” and that Mr Gideon’s actions amount to contempt and a breach of privilege.
The lawmaker was ordered to write a formal apology to the House within the suspension period.
Mr Gideon could not be reached for comment on his suspension, as his contact was unreachable.
