Kwara student pleads guilty to internet fraud; gets six-month sentence

A student, Feranmi Adeogun, 21, has been sentenced to six months in the Correctional Centre after pleading guilty to impersonation and internet scam.
Mr Adeogun was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Ilorin Division of the Kwara State High Court over alleged internet fraud.
The convict was among 30 internet fraud suspects arrested during a sting operation by operatives of the EFCC on September 19, 2021, at Malete, Moro Local Government Area of Kwara.
Delivering judgment, the trial judge, Adenike Akinpelu, said following the convict’s guilty plea and evidence tendered, the EFCC had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Consequently, Ms Akinpelu sentenced Adeogun to six months in the Correctional Centre with an option of N150,000 fine.
The court also ordered the forfeiture of the HP laptop recovered from the convict at the point of arrest to the federal government.
The charge read: “that you, Timileyin Feranmi Adeogun, on or about October 20, 2019 in Ilorin, impersonated and cheated by pretending to be one Hannah Sanabria, through e-mail address hannahsanabriah@gmail.com.
“The convict communicated with one Reus Saints, whom he induced to part with property, worth $1500, through bitcoin,’’ it said.
According to the charge, the offence committed was contrary to section 321 of the Penal Code Law and punishable under section 324 of the same law.
