The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project has delivered 154,000 assorted livestock vaccines to Jigawa to tackle transboundary animal diseases in the state.

Nazifi Ibrahim, the project’s conflict mitigation officer, made this known on Friday while handing over the consignments to the Jigawa State Ministry of Livestock Development in Dutse.

Mr Ibrahim said the vaccines were provided in line with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises the transformation of the livestock industry and strengthening national animal health systems.

He explained that the project, under the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, has embarked on a nationwide delivery of livestock vaccines to states for onward vaccination exercises.

The official said the nationwide exercise is a key intervention aimed at improving disease prevention and control, enhancing livestock productivity, protecting pastoral and farming livelihoods, and supporting the federal government’s food security drive.

“The purpose is to tackle transboundary animal diseases, and Jigawa is one of the states that shares a border with the Niger Republic. We want to tackle these diseases before they even surface in the country.

“This is one of the reasons we supplied these vaccines to prevent the spread of these diseases. The vaccines are 150,000 doses of Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) and 4,000 doses of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).”

Mr Ibrahim disclosed that Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) and Newcastle Disease (NCD) vaccines would be supplied the following week.

The director of veterinary services at the Jigawa Ministry of Livestock Development, Mahmud Danyaro, reiterated the state’s commitment to improving livestock production through vaccination and reproduction.

He said the government has been conducting annual animal vaccinations at designated camps across the state to ensure the production and consumption of wholesome meat.
