Sen. Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party has thrown its weight behind the party’s withdrawal from the Saturday Local Government elections in Anambra.

This was contained in a statement signed by Ms Usman and made available to journalists in Onitsha on Wednesday.

According to her, the national body has endorsed the position of the state executive on staying away from the forthcoming local government election in the state, as the process violates the Electoral Act.

“The national leadership is on the same page with Anambra on the position of the Labour Party concerning the Anambra local government election scheduled to hold on Sept. 28.

“The party never sponsored any candidates to contest the questioned Anambra State local government election,” she said.

Ms Usman also stated that the national leadership of the party endorsed the Ugochukwu Emeh and Okoli Akirika-led state executive in Anambra.

“The national leadership of the Labour Party is aware and is in total support of the position of the Labour Party in Anambra State led by Ugochukwu Emeh as Chairman and Okoli Akirika as Secretary.”

She noted that the national leadership of the Labour Party was also aware that they were already in court with Suit No. A/265/2024 Labour Party vs. Anambra State House of Assembly.

“We are also aware of Suit No. FHC/CV/AWK/223/2024 Labour Party vs. ANSIEC and 14 others, challenging the procedure for the proposed LGA election.”
