A 70-year-old driver, Isiaka Afolayan, has been arrested for reckless driving and manslaughter of a 14-year-old boy.

Mr Afolayan was arraigned on Monday before the Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The defendant is facing a two-count charge of manslaughter and reckless driving.

Mr Afolayan pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on April 22 at 3:30.p.m. in Badagry.

Mr Ekpo said the defendant drove an SUV with registration number AGL 122 BJ in a reckless manner that resulted in the death of the boy.

He said the defendant drove the car on a public highway in a dangerous manner with no regard for other road users, which led to the death of the lad.

The prosecutor stated that the offences contravened Sections 27 and 19 of the Road Traffic Act, Cap 124, Law of Lagos State, Nigeria.

The chief magistrate, Nurudeen Layeni, granted the accused bail of N1,000,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The magistrate said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed.

The case was adjourned until July 9 for a hearing.
