The Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy Governorship Candidate, Damilola Sonayon-James, has urged young people to embrace cycling and other sporting activities for healthy living.

Ms Sonayon-James made the call Friday night at a reception organised for Tour d’Afrique cyclists in Badagry as part of activities marking the 2026 World Cycling Day.

The event, with the themed, “Cycling to Stay Fit,” was hosted by the Badagry Federation, comprising Badagry Local Government, Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and Badagry West LCDA.

She said sports and physical exercise were essential for maintaining sound mental and physical health.

She stated, “I urge young people to embrace cycling and other sporting activities because the importance of physical exercise for healthy living cannot be overemphasised. I also want to see more youth participation in governance, leadership and community development.”

Ms Sonayon-James commended the cyclists and appreciated the warm reception accorded them by residents of the area.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Babatunde Hunpe, described the programme as a positive initiative capable of promoting sports and tourism in the area.

Mr Hunpe said the event would also enhance the visibility of the Badagry Federation.

Also speaking, Arinola Ajose, wife of the late Governance Advisory Council (GAC) leader, Chief Sunny Ajose, expressed delight over the event.

She described it as a reflection of one of her late husband’s aspirations for the development of Badagry.

Mrs Ajose prayed for Ms Sonayon-James and urged her to remain committed to the growth and progress of the area.

In his remarks, the APC Apex Leader in Badagry West LCDA, Joseph Bamgbose, commended the initiative.

He also praised Ms Sonayon-James for her commitment to the development of the Badagry Federation and wished her success in her political aspirations.
