Lagos Baales’ Forum rallies residents for April 25 environmental sanitation

Chairman of the Lagos State Baales’ Forum, Joseph Keshinro, has called on residents across all council areas to take part in the April 25 environment sanitation to keep the state clean and safe during the rainy season.
Mr Keshinro made the call during an interview with in Lagos on Saturday.
The Lagos State Government reintroduced its monthly environmental sanitation, starting April 25.
He stressed that proactive environmental practices were key to minimising the impact of the rainy season.
According to him, the exercise is not just a routine activity but a preventive measure against flooding, environmental degradation, and disease outbreaks.
“As we approach the rainy season, it is important for residents to take the April 25 environmental sanitation very seriously. Cleaning drainage channels, clearing refuse and keeping surroundings tidy will go a long way in preventing flooding and health challenges associated with poor sanitation,” he said.
He raised concerns about indiscriminate waste disposal and blocked drainage channels in many communities, warning that these habits could worsen flooding during heavy rainfall.
Mr Keshinro noted that community participation remains key to achieving the desired impact, adding that government efforts alone were insufficient without grassroots support.
“The government cannot do it alone. Residents must take ownership of their environment by ensuring proper waste disposal and regular cleaning of their surroundings,” he said.
He also urged traditional rulers and community heads to intensify sensitisation campaigns in their domains to ensure compliance.
“I urge all traditional rulers to mobilise their residents and ensure they come out to participate fully in the sanitation. They should sensitise households in their communities and encourage everyone to take part, because a clean environment benefits everyone,” he said.
Mr Keshinro also advised traders and market leaders to keep their trading areas and stalls clean, and avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels.
He commended the Lagos State Government for sustaining the monthly environmental sanitation, describing it as a vital initiative for maintaining environmental cleanliness and public health.
Mr Keshinro said traditional institutions remain committed to supporting government efforts to promote environmental hygiene and prevent flooding across the state.
He added, The Baales’ Forum will continue to work with the government and residents to promote cleanliness and environmental responsibility across Lagos.”
