The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has called for education that fosters creativity, innovation, and human values as artificial intelligence and other technologies shape the world.

The commissioner, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, made the call in a statement on Friday.

The statement was to celebrate the 2025 International Day of Education with the theme ‘Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation’.

Mr Alli-Balogun said, “As we mark this important day, we are reminded of the immense challenges facing our education sector.”

The commissioner said despite efforts by governments, many citizens, particularly the vulnerable, had continued to face barriers in accessing quality education.

“As we navigate this rapidly changing landscape, we must ensure that our education system prepares learners to thrive in a world where automation and AI are increasingly prevalent.

“This requires a renewed focus on developing skills that are complementary to technology,” said Mr Alli-Balogun.

Mr Alli-Balogun added, “However, this is not just about preparing learners for the future of work; it is about ensuring that education serves as a powerful tool for social mobility, equality, and justice.

“There is a need to prioritise investment in our education sector and ensure that schools are well-equipped, teachers are well-trained, and learners have access to quality learning resources.”

The commissioner said empathy, problem-solving ability, and collaboration were needed for improved learning outcomes. He described the celebration as a call to action, saying that education was the key to unlocking the potential of communities and societies.

He urged promoting education for the girl child, support for learners with disabilities, technical education and addressing the needs of marginalised communities.

Mr Alli-Balogun explained that initiatives should be encouraged to promote digital literacy, online learning, and innovative uses of AI and other technologies.
