Lagos council chairmen urge unity, active citizens’ participation in democracy

Usman Hamzat, chairman of the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State, has urged Nigerians to embrace unity and peace and to actively participate in democracy.
Mr Hamzat gave the advice in a goodwill message in Lagos on Friday to commemorate the nation’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic journey.
He also urged Nigerians to uphold democratic values, stressing that “democracy thrives when leadership serves, and citizens participate.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, may our nation continue to advance in peace, unity, and prosperity.
“Democracy Day is a reminder of Nigeria’s resilience and the collective efforts of leaders and citizens to advance the country’s democratic growth and sustainable development,” he said.
Oluyemisi Rosiji, chairman of Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA), in her goodwill message, described June 12 as a historic symbol of sacrifices made by patriotic Nigerians who fought for democratic governance and freedom of choice.
She also stressed that Democracy Day served as a reminder of collective responsibility, urging leaders and citizens to strengthen institutions, promote accountability, and ensure responsive governance.
Ms Rosiji reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to grassroots development, youth empowerment, infrastructure, and social welfare.
She pledged that the dividends of democracy would reach all residents of the community.
The chairman commended residents for their peaceful coexistence and support, saying, “It is vital for progress.”
She urged Nigerians to renew their faith in the nation.
Abiodun Ejigbadero, chairman of Agbado-Okeodo LCDA, said June 12 was about sacrifice and justice.
“June 12 symbolises courage, sacrifice, and determination. Democracy is about justice, freedom, and impactful governance,” he said.
Mr Ejigbadero noted that democracy would flourish when citizens participate and are united, adding that “every community member plays a vital role in building a prosperous Agbado-Okeodo.”
