Lagos court convicts 19 residents for illegal waste disposal

A Magistrate Court in Oshodi, Lagos State, has ordered 19 persons to carry out community service, involving thorough cleaning, grass cutting, and sweeping of the Oshodi/Isolo Local Government community.
The presiding magistrate, Ademola Adesanya, meted out the punishment on Friday, after they were arrested and convicted for indiscriminate dumping of waste, an offence which contravened the state environmental law.
The 19 of them punished, were out of a total of 24 individuals brought before the court, while five minors were warned to desist from similar act or risk being sent to Juvenile Court.
Reacting to the judgement, the Managing Director of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin, expressed satisfaction with the court’s firm stance in combating environmental offences, as he reiterated the state government’s zero tolerance policy against indiscriminate waste dumping.
“This decisive action by the Magistrate’s Court is a significant step towards maintaining a clean and healthy environment for all residents.
“It sends a clear message that waste management regulations will be rigorously enforced, and offenders will face the full wroth of the law.” he warned.
Mr Gbadegesin urged residents to imbibe proper waste management practices, noting that improper disposal of waste not only jeopardises public health but also has far-reaching environmental consequences.
“The exercise is ongoing. We must all take ownership of our environment. Responsible waste management is not just a legal obligation, but a moral one.
“It is imperative for every individual to play their part in preserving the beauty and sustainability of our communities,” Mr Gbadegesin stated.
