The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Fatai Tijani, has urged residents to take greater responsibility in monitoring their children and supporting security agencies in tackling cultism and youth-related crime.

Mr Tijani made the call while addressing journalists at the command headquarters in Ikeja on Wednesday.

According to him, many individuals involved in cult activities are known within their communities.

“Tackling cultism requires a collective approach, as those involved are often our children, brothers, and neighbours, making community participation crucial in identifying and curbing such crimes,” he said.

The commissioner said the police had intensified sensitisation campaigns across the state, moving from one community to another to educate residents on their roles in preventing crime and supporting law enforcement efforts.

Mr Tijani said parents and guardians should closely monitor their wards and be alert to suspicious behaviour, noting that early intervention could prevent youths from being drawn into criminal activities.

He assured residents that information provided to the police would be treated confidentially and encouraged members of the public to volunteer credible intelligence without fear.

Mr Tijani also highlighted ongoing youth-focused initiatives by the command, including school outreach programmes aimed at discouraging young people from engaging in cultism and other criminal acts.

He also warned against the use of youths for political violence, particularly as the electoral period approaches.

He said the law would not tolerate the recruitment of young people for thuggery or any other unlawful activities.

The police boss said the command had continued to intensify operations across identified hotspots, where daily patrols and enforcement activities had been stepped up to curb street violence.

He noted that the sustained efforts had already begun to yield results, with a noticeable reduction in criminal activities in affected areas.

Mr Tijani reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, assuring residents that ongoing operations would be sustained to ensure lasting peace and security across the state.

He called on residents to remain vigilant and collaborate with the police by providing timely and actionable information to aid crime prevention and enforcement efforts.
