Lagos firms’ annual tax filing gets January 31 deadline

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has called on employers of labour in the state to file their annual tax returns in accordance with the provisions of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025.
In a statement on Thursday, the Executive Chairman of LIRS, Ayodele Subair, urged employers to submit detailed returns on emoluments and compensation awarded to their employees, before the deadline.
According to Mr Subair, details including payments made to service providers, vendors and consultants, as well as all applicable taxes due for the year 2025 should be fully remitted by January 31, as the statutory deadline.
“Employers must prioritise the timely filing of their annual income tax returns. Compliance should be part of our everyday business practice. Early and accurate filing not only ensures adherence to the law as required by the Nigerian Constitution, but also supports effective revenue tracking, which is important to Lagos State’s fiscal planning and sustainability,” Mr Subair stated.
Referencing Section 14 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, the LIRS boss warned that defaulters would be liable to statutory sanctions, including administrative penalties, as stated under the new tax law.
Mr Subair noted that electronic filing via the Lagos State LIRS eTax platform, which simplifies and standardises tax administration processes, remains the only approved and acceptable mode of submissions.
The LIRS boss described the LIRS eTax platform as user-friendly and accessible, designed to provide employers with a smooth means of fulfilling their tax obligations.
He urged employers to ensure that submitted Tax Identification Number (TaxID) are correctly captured, while employees without a TaxID should generate one promptly to prevent filing disruptions.
