Lagos government arrests 215 suspected street beggars

According to the commissioner, the operation was part of efforts to maintain public order.

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps have arrested 215 suspected street beggars in different parts of the state.

Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement on Saturday, said the arrests were carried out during intensive operations to address the activities of street urchins.

Mr Wahab said, “Personnel of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps have commenced a series of intensive operations across the state to address street begging and the activities of street urchins.

“During the exercise, a total of 215 street beggars were apprehended, comprising 152 males, 46 females, and 17 young adults.”

According to him, the operation was part of efforts to maintain public order, promote environmental sanitation, and ensure safer and more orderly public spaces across the state.
