Lagos government dissolves garages committee, lifts suspension on RTEAN

The Lagos State government has lifted the suspension on the activities of the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and dissolved the Lagos State Parks and Garages Administrators’ Committee with immediate effect.
The state government had suspended the activities of RTEAN in September 2022 and constituted a caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of the union.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s special adviser on transportation, Sola Giwa, said in a statement on Monday that the development was to enhance peace and good working relationships among the union members in the state’s transportation sector.
He said the decision also followed “careful” consideration” and extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders in the sector.
“Government took the decision after careful consideration and extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders, including members of the association, Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the general public.
“Also, the Lagos State Parks and Garages Administrators’ Committee, which was set up to manage parks and garage facilities in the state, has been dissolved with immediate effect,” he said.
Mr Giwa added that the decision to lift the ban on RTEAN and dissolve the caretaker committee would foster a more collaborative relationship between the government and the transport union, ultimately leading to improved services for the public.
The special adviser urged all parties involved to adhere strictly to the terms and conditions of the settlement reached for peaceful and sustainable operations in the transportation sector.
He also implored them to cooperate and work together toward building a better transportation system to benefit all Lagos state residents.
The National Industrial Court in Lagos had, in April 2023, nullified the state government’s ban on RTEAN’s activities and the constitution of the Park and Garages Administrators’ Committee in its place.
