The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has sealed the Ikeja Golf Club for negligence and disregarding safety of lives and property.

The LASBCA director of public affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa, in a statement on Wednesday, said the enforcement was carried out after receiving reports of several unsatisfactory incidents at the club.

Mr Ademuyiwa wrote, “The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has taken decisive action by sealing off the Ikeja Golf Club at Oba Akinjobi Way, GRA, after several incidents of negligence raised concerns about public Safety of lives and property damage.

“The closure was prompted by repeated complaints and a recent incident in which a golf ball struck a LASBCA staff member in its Ikeja Headquarter’s premises.

“In addition to this unfortunate incident, there have been multiple cases of errant golf balls causing damage to vehicles in the vicinity,” he added.

The agency stated that the club’s management has also failed to adhere to warnings and instructions to provide adequate safety measures, including “protective netting or redesigned play areas, to prevent golf balls from exiting the premises,” leading to the shut down of the club until “satisfactory safety measures are in place.”

According to the statement, the LASBCA general manager, Gbolahan Oki, said he was disappointed with the club’s management and the players for the disregard for safety of lives and properties.

“It is alarming to witness such a level of negligence from an establishment of this standing. The persistent disregard for public safety measures is unacceptable, especially when it endangers individuals and damages lives and properties,” Mr Oki said.

Stating that the lack of precautionary measures at the club, violated regulations meant to protect the public, Mr Oki said the enforcement action stressed the agency’s resolve to safeguard residents and visitors from preventable hazards.
