The Police College Tennis Club, Ikeja, buzzed on Friday as sports lovers and tennis enthusiasts gathered for the fourth Lagos Ladies Open.

The event was organised by Bridge Her Initiative for Women and Girls Empowerment (BHI).

Funke Aiyenugba emerged overall winner, claiming ₦100,000, while Ganiyat Bose Adeniran was first runner-up with ₦70,000. The third place received ₦30,000 as a consolation prize.

The tournament drew participants and supporters from across Lagos.

Started years ago to encourage women in tennis, the event now promotes empowerment, health awareness, and social bonding.

This year, over 90 women registered to compete, with more than 200 spectators in attendance, reflecting growing interest in women’s sports.

Many participants described the tournament as more than a competition, noting it offered a safe, supportive environment to build confidence and network.

Convener of the Lagos Ladies Open and founder of BHI, Lilian Uzodiagu, said the initiative arose from observing a gender gap in Nigerian tennis.

She said, “Women remain underrepresented, not due to lack of interest, but limited access and awareness. Our tournament started with just 22 players.

“Through consistency and encouragement, participation has grown. Over 90 women registered this year, proving women will embrace tennis when opportunities exist.”

On the court, competition was intense, with players displaying skill, determination, and commitment to excellence.

Ms Uzodiagu said the prize structure rewards talent while recognising dedication and discipline required to compete at a high level.

Beyond tennis, the event included a wellness session on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), facilitated by Dr founder of Outreach Hub, Rachael Rieninwa.

Rieninwa highlighted early awareness, lifestyle management, and the role of physical activity in maintaining women’s overall health and wellbeing.

Player, Omeruo Nwajiagah, described the tournament as impactful, praising the inclusion of health education alongside sporting competition.

“This is a great way to socialise and connect with other women. The PCOS session taught us how lifestyle choices affect health,” she said.

Spectators and participants noted the blend of sport and wellness distinguished the Lagos Ladies Open as a holistic initiative, not just a tournament.

With steady growth, the Lagos Ladies Open exemplifies how community sports can boost women’s participation, promote wellness, and drive social impact.

Organisers expressed optimism that future editions would attract stronger partnerships and sponsorships, expanding opportunities for women and growing tennis across Nigeria.
