Lagos man arraigned over alleged theft of goods worth N1.2 million

A 53-year-old man, Obisesan Kehinde, on Tuesday appeared before an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing goods worth N1.2 million.

Mr Kehinde, whose residential address was not stated, is standing trial on a two-count charge of stealing and breach of peace.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Simon Njue, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 7, at No. 15, Ikola Odunsi, Ipaja, Ikola, Lagos.

He alleged that the defendant stole 20 bags of rice valued at N1.2 million, belonging to Ashaolu Oluwaseun.

Mr Njue told the court that the defendant caused a breach of peace by converting the 20 bags of rice to his personal use.

The offences contravene the provisions of sections 168 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.

Section 287 prescribes a penalty of three years’ imprisonment for stealing, while section 168(d) prescribes a penalty of two years’ imprisonment for breach of peace.

The magistrate, F.R. Ogunkoyode, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The court adjourned the case until July 17 for mention.
