Lagos marketer docked for alleged N360,000 cryptocurrency fraud

A 27-year-old marketer, John Akpa, was on Monday docked in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for alleged N360,000 cryptocurrency fraud.
The police charged the defendant, a marketer, who resides at Mopo Akinland area, Ajah, Lagos with conspiracy, fraud and obtaining by false pretences.
Prosecution counsel Felicia Okwori told the court that the offence was committed between June 24 and June 29 at the Ajah area of Lagos State.
Ms Okwori said the defendant obtained N360,000 from Susan Ekechukwu on the false pretences of helping her to invest it in an online cryptocurrency investment.
The prosecutor also said that since then, the complainant has been calling the defendant to show her evidence of payment and how she will go about the trading.
Ms Okwori told the court that all efforts by Ms Ekechukwu to collect her money failed.
The offence, she said, contravenes the provisions of sections 280, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015, to which the defendant pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, L.O Owolabi, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until October 28 for mention.
