Lagos: New AIG vows to curb human rights abuses in police investigations

The newly promoted Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, Lagos, Simeon Akpanudom, has pledged to eliminate human rights abuses in police investigations.
Mr Akpanudom, who assumed duty on Monday as the 56th AIG, made the pledge during his inaugural speech at the FCID headquarters.
He described his appointment as a significant responsibility and a call to serve with integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
Mr Akpanudom noted that the FCID, as the apex investigative arm of the Nigeria Police Force, was saddled with handling complex and sensitive criminal cases of both national and international dimensions.
He said that such responsibilities required strict adherence to the rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights.
”I see my posting as a call for the highest level of professionalism, transparency, accountability, and responsibility to ensure that human rights are respected and the rule of law is upheld,” he said.
The AIG underscored the importance of rebuilding public trust in the police, noting that effective law enforcement depends on public confidence.
He aligned his vision with the IGP’s philosophy of people-centred policing, which prioritisedrespect, fairness, and community engagement.
Mr Akpanudom revealed plans to enhance FCID personnel’s investigative capacity through intensive training, the adoption of modern technology, and strategic partnerships with ministries, departments, agencies, and the private sector.
He said the initiatives would be implemented within 30 to 60 days of his assuming office.
The FCID boss explained that improving investigative processes would not only boost efficiency but also reduce incidents of rights violations, prevent costly litigation, and enhance the credibility of the police force.
He warned personnel against misconduct, adding that disciplinary breaches would be dealt with in accordance with extant laws, including the Police Act, Force Orders, and Public Service Rules.
Mr Akpanudom also promised that officers who demonstrate professionalism and exemplary conduct would be recognised and rewarded.
The police boss expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for finding him worthy of the position, noting that the office he now occupied carried immense expectations.
He called on the media to play a constructive role by disseminating accurate information about police activities, stressing that responsible reporting was essential to building trust and enhancing national security.
”Together, through robust partnership, we will build trust and enhance national security, starting from our immediate communities,” he said.
