The Lagos government has shut down Mile 12 and Owode Onirin markets for violating environmental laws.

The senior special assistant on new media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Jubril Gawat, disclosed this on his X handle on Friday.

According to Mr Gawat, the markets were sealed due to indiscriminate dumping and burning of refuse, a filthy environment, and blocked and littered drainages.

Mr Gawat added that illegal and indiscriminate parking and the abandonment of trucks on major roads, which impedes the free flow of traffic, was another reason for closing the markets.

Mr Gawat said the closure was under the directive of the commissioner for environment, Tokunbo Wahab.

“Acting on the directives of Commissioner for Environment, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, enforcement operatives from LAWMA and KAI, in a joint operation in the early hours of Friday, October 13, sealed up the Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road in Kosofe LG for indiscriminate dumping and burning of refuse, filthy environment, blocked and littered drainages, menace of illegal and indiscriminate parking and abandonment of trucks on the major road thereby impeding free flow of traffic,” the aide wrote on X.

In the past week, the state government closed down other popular markets for environmental offences.

The markets earlier closed down are Ladipo, Oyingbo, Alamutu Ologede and Ile-Epo.
