The Lagos State government has introduced a renewed enforcement drive to improve commuter safety and ensure compliance with vehicle and driver identification requirements among commercial transport operators.

The director of PTCS, Nuhman Edu, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, saying the partnership was aimed at addressing compliance gaps in the state’s transport sector.

The initiative is being implemented by the Ministry of Transportation through its Directorate of Public Transport and Commuter Services (PTCS), in collaboration with the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

He identified the gaps to include the absence of vehicle registration documents, body tags, stage carriage permits, drivers’ badges and conductors’ badges.

Mr Edu said the collaboration would strengthen document verification during enforcement operations, while vehicles found violating the regulations would face appropriate sanctions or corrective measures in line with existing laws.

He explained that proper identification of commercial vehicles and their operators would improve traceability, promote accountability and support investigations into cases where vehicles were allegedly used to commit crimes.

According to him, the initiative would also establish mechanisms for monitoring compliance, identifying gaps, sharing information among the agencies and referring cases to relevant authorities.

Mr Edu said ensuring the safety and security of commuters remained a priority in the government’s efforts to regulate the transport sector in Lagos.

He added that the ministry had engaged transport unions and associations through meetings, media campaigns and sensitisation programmes to educate operators on existing regulatory requirements.

The government, he said, would sustain monitoring and compliance assessments across the state to identify emerging challenges requiring intervention.

According to Mr Edu, the partnership would also provide channels for reporting violations and receiving feedback to enable the agencies to address issues promptly.

He said the collaboration demonstrated the state’s commitment to strengthening transport regulation, promoting accountability among operators and providing commuters with safer and more reliable transportation services.
