Lagos: Umahi threatens to arrest contractor, terminate road contract over poor performance

“How many years do they want to stay here? The game is over,” said Mr Umahi. “The supervising engineer will risk his job if this job is not started.”

Works minister David Umahi warned on Sunday that he would terminate the contract for the construction of the Ikorodu-Itoki road if the contractor failed to heed his instructions.

GELD Construction Ltd. is the contractor handling the project.

Mr Umahi gave the warning during an inspection tour of the project. Mr Umahi expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the work.

“I am very disappointed because they are more interested in what is the impossibility of doing this job than cooperating with us to do what is possible at this point.

“How many years do they want to stay here? The game is over.  The supervising engineer will risk his job if this job is not started. His job is to report to us that the contractor has disobeyed. Then, I will have the contractor arrested,” he said.

He directed  night excavation on the road to ensure seamless traffic.

“The road is eight metres wide. What we have directed is to concentrate on making sure that the first section, we excavate it at night, fill it back with lumps and stone base mixed with cement.

”It will look like concrete so that we have a seamless traffic flow. We now start completing the project section by section.

“In the first section, we could take five kilometers of the road, mill it and then use it to build the shoulders,” he said.

According to the minister, there are places where the shoulders are impossible.

“We are going to skip some. We do everything working at the eight metres at night  by milling it and then putting 60 millimetres of binder and 40 millimetres of bearing,” stated Mr Umahi.
