Lagos unveils 10-day burial rites for Akran of Badagry

The Lagos State government has announced a 10-day burial programme for the late Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu-Tovi I, who died on January 12.
Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Secretary to the Lagos State Government, disclosed this on Saturday during a media briefing held in Badagry.
Mrs Salu-Hundeyin, who is also chairman of the Central Planning Committee, said the ceremonies would run from April 23 to May 6.
“The Lagos State Government, under Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is committed to honouring the Akran befittingly.
“That commitment is reflected in the composition of this committee and the care devoted to planning these activities.
“You will notice that this announcement took time. That was deliberate to align with traditional rites and existing state programmes.
“It was necessary to strike the right balance so everything is conducted properly and respectfully,” she said.
She outlined events beginning on April 23 with gun salutes, Iwure prayers, and Ajogan parades across Badagry’s eight quarters.
“This includes traditional gun salutes across the quarters and prayers at the Akran Palace.
“On April 24, a novelty football match in honour of Aholu Menu-Tovi I will hold at Badagry Grammar School.
“April 25 will feature community service, medical outreach at the palace, and sanitation across Badagry,” she added.
She said days four to six would feature homage visits by associations, businesses, artisans, and groups to the Akran Palace.
“April 29 includes inspection of project sites such as Badagry Central Palace and Menu-Tovi I Square.
“There will also be a Christian Association of Nigeria procession on the same day.
“April 30 will feature a youth programme, including Fitila Night processions and a night of tribute at the palace.
“On May 1, a Jumat service will hold at the Central Mosque, alongside the Akran Legacy Festival at Marina.
“May 2 will feature an interdenominational service at Freeman Memorial Methodist Cathedral.
“A foundation-laying ceremony for Aholu Menu-Tovi I Park and a grand reception will follow at Badagry Grammar School.
“May 3 will be a thanksgiving service at the cathedral, with a reception at the Methodist Mission House.
“The final day, May 6, will feature Zangbeto processions, Hungan drumming, and Oro traditional rites across Badagry.
“These activities reflect the depth of tradition, culture, and leadership that defined the monarch’s reign,” she said.
Mrs Salu-Hundeyin urged residents to observe the dates and participate appropriately in honouring the late traditional ruler.
Bonu Solomon, representing Badagry Constituency I, described the Akran Legacy Festival as a central highlight.
“Baba did much to uplift youths. This festival will open the Badagry economy as a three-day trade and entertainment hub.
“We call on all people of Badagry, at home and abroad, to celebrate the Akran’s legacy,” he added.
Adeyinka Amosu, chairman of the media and publicity committee, said state involvement would end months of uncertainty surrounding the burial arrangements.
He noted that the celebration signalled renewed state attention to development in Badagry Division.
The traditional rulers, chiefs, and committee members attended the briefing.
