A woman, Rejoice Matthew, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday over alleged theft of a gold chain worth ₦2.17 million.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant faces two counts bordering on conspiracy and theft.

The police prosecutor, John Iberedem, said the alleged offences occurred on August 19, 2025, along Orelope Street, Egbeda, Lagos.

He told the court, “She conspired with others now at large to commit the offence.”

Mr Iberedem said Ms Matthew allegedly stole the gold chain, valued at ₦2,170,000, belonging to the complainant, Esan Bayo.

He said the alleged offences contravened Sections 411 and 287(10) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Ms Matthew, however, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read before the court.

The magistrate, O.A. Odubayo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦100,000 with sureties in like sum.

Ms Odubayo thereafter adjourned the case until May 20 for hearing.
