Laos’ Ministry of Public Security on Thursday held a drug burning ceremony to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The ministry reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to fighting drug abuse and underscoring the serious threat it poses to economic, cultural, and social development.

The ceremony was attended by Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security Vilay Lakhamfong, along with other key stakeholders.

Speaking at the ceremony, Lao Deputy Minister of Public Security Khamking Phuilamanyvong provided an overview of Laos’ drug control efforts over the past year.

He emphasised that the global drug epidemic continues to escalate, fuelling violence and posing serious threats to economic, social, and political stability worldwide.

He said in Laos, drug abuse remains a pressing challenge, prompting officials at all levels to prioritise the issue through coordinated, multi-sectoral efforts and comprehensive prevention measures.

According to him, in 2024, a total of 8,476 people received treatment at 14 rehabilitation centres across Laos.

He said that the government established 3,222 drug-free villages and 5,917 drug-free schools and educational institutions.

Authorities handled 4,158 drug cases, arrested 6,297 suspects, and seized large amounts of drugs, vehicles, and other assets.

Laos also worked with international organisations and neighbouring countries to strengthen joint research, dialogue, and drug control efforts.

In a speech, Mr Sonexay reaffirmed the Lao government’s commitment to the anti-drug campaign.

He thanked the defence and security forces, relevant agencies, and the Lao people for their continued support in implementing the national drug control agenda.

Mr Sonexay also expressed appreciation to international partners and the private sector, urging all citizens and foreigners living and working in Laos to play an active role in preventing and eliminating drug abuse to build a drug-free society.
