LASBCA condemns illegal building demolition in Alimosho, condoles victims’ families
The Lagos State Building Control Agency has sympathised with the families of a dead victim and two others persons injured during an illegal manual demolition of a two-storey building in Aboru, Alimosho, on Thursday.
LASBCA spokesperson, Adu Ademuyiwa, in a statement on Friday, warned property owners, developers and other stakeholders, against carrying out building demolitions without adhering to approved procedures, professional supervision and prescribed safety measures.
Mr Ademuyiwa said, “The agency has expressed its sympathy to those affected by the unfortunate building collapse at No. 42, Governors Road, Aboru, in the Alimosho area of Lagos State.”
Condemning the illegal demolition of structures, and highlighting the dangers associated with it, LASBCA noted that demolition activities must be properly planned and carried out in accordance with relevant building control regulations.
Mr Ademuyiwa stated, “The agency emphasised that demolition is a technical activity that requires the engagement of competent and registered professionals, appropriate safety measures and necessary approvals from the relevant authorities before work commences.
“LASBCA noted that resorting to manual or indiscriminate demolition without adequate technical assessment and supervision can pose serious risks to workers, adjoining properties and members of the public.
“The agency urged property owners and developers intending to remove existing structures to obtain the required approvals and engage qualified professionals to ensure that demolition activities are undertaken safely and in conformity with Lagos State building regulations.”
The LASBCA General Manager, Omolola Florence Gbaye, therefore urged stakeholders to prioritise safety and building conformity.
She noted that compliance with established procedures remains essential to preventing avoidable incidents arising from construction and demolition activities.
