The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is seeking a strategic partnership with China to deploy advanced technology and improve traffic management across Lagos.

LASTMA general manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made this known on Friday during a working visit to the Chinese Consulate in Lagos.

Mr Bakare-Oki led senior management officials to meet the Consul General, Yan Yuqing, for discussions on traffic management and technological innovation.

He said Lagos’ growing vehicular population and commercial activities required sophisticated, technology-driven solutions to address congestion, enforcement, surveillance and incident management.

“LASTMA is committed to adopting Intelligent Transportation Systems, real-time traffic monitoring, smart surveillance, artificial intelligence and data-driven enforcement,” he said.

Mr Bakare-Oki said the proposed partnership would provide access to international expertise, technological knowledge and innovative solutions adaptable to Lagos’ transportation environment.

He stressed the importance of deploying cutting-edge technology and international best practices to improve efficiency, precision and responsiveness in traffic management operations.

The LASTMA boss also advocated sustained professional development, specialised training and knowledge transfer for personnel operating advanced traffic management technologies.

He said the initiative would strengthen LASTMA’s capacity to harness emerging technologies while improving operational efficiency and traffic enforcement.

Mr Bakare-Oki reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to partnerships that promote safer roads, smoother traffic flow, efficient incident response and orderly transportation.

Responding, Ms Yan welcomed the visit and expressed support for stronger institutional exchanges between Lagos authorities and their Chinese counterparts.

She identified transportation, urban mobility and technological innovation as areas where greater cooperation could produce mutually beneficial outcomes.

The discussions covered intelligent transportation systems, traffic data management, road safety, technological capacity building and operational efficiency.

They also explored innovative solutions to Lagos’ growing urban mobility challenges and opportunities for stronger technical cooperation.

The visit marked a step towards expanding LASTMA’s international partnerships and advancing intelligent, technology-enabled and data-driven traffic management across Lagos.
