Law firm criticises magistrate over Lawyer Abdul Mahmud’s bail revocation, remand

A leading Nigerian law firm, Liberty Semper Fidelis LP, has expressed concern over the continuous harassment of its managing partner, Abdul Mahmud, following the revocation of his bail and remand by a magistrates’ court in Nasarawa State on Friday.
In a statement on Saturday, the law firm highlighted the circumstances surrounding the legal proceedings against Mr Mahmud, noting it was compelled to set the records straight after Chief Magistrate Zuluhiat Yusuf remanded the legal practitioner.
According to the firm, the issue began on June 26, 2023, when Mr Mahmud reportedly prevented two policewomen, allegedly acting on the order of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa, Amabua Muhammed, from arresting the security guard of the Incorporated Trustees of Fatima Gold Estate.
Ms Muhammed, who has two bungalows inside the estate, had alleged that the security guard was falsely imprisoning her sister inside one of the buildings.
Upon his return to the scene later in the day, the firm accused the senior police officer of descending on Mr Mahmud instead, but he was only let go after intervention by other residents.
Mr Mahmud was eventually arrested the following day based on a warrant issued by the magistrates’ court in New Nyanya, Nasarawa State. He was later released following intervention by Tunji Bello, the former principal staff officer to the then Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, but was asked to return on July 5, the firm detailed.
The firm alleged that its managing director was instead immediately arraigned in court upon his return to the police station but was granted bail on self-recognition, with the matter then adjourned until August 23.
Additionally, Ms Muhammed allegedly filed repeated petitions against Mr Mahmud with the Force Intelligence Bureau in Abuja, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the Police Service Commission, and the Code of Conduct Bureau, but was unsuccessful.
Following the exhaustion of means to further indict Mr Mahmud, the firm said Ms Muhammed, who is determined to incarcerate the defendant, shifted her focus to the initial case.
Furthermore, the firm expressed concern with Ms Yusuf’s handling of the case after revocation of Mr Mahmud’s bail at a hearing on Friday, upon his return from the United Kingdom, where he had gone for medical treatment following advice from his doctors in Nigeria
It called on the chief judge of Nasarawa to review the magistrate’s conduct.
“We call on the chief judge of Nasarawa State to take a serious view of the conduct of the magistracy in this matter, particularly proceedings in the court presided over by Zuluhiat Yusuf, who reportedly had been transferred since October 2025 to the Nasarawa State Judiciary in Lafia, which has turned itself into a weapon of hire by interests.
“We ask what particular interest compels her continued involvement in Mahmud’s trial under a fiat said to have been granted by the Chief Judge,” the firm stated.
