The Nigerian Senate has ratified the appointment of the new service chiefs.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan had given the Senate Committee on Defence, led by Senator Aliyu Wamakko, two weeks to carry out their assignments and report to the Senate in plenary.

The lawmakers confirmed the appointment of the service chiefs during their Tuesday plenary session, after receiving the committee’s report.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari in a controversial move appointed the new service chiefs without seeking the approval of the Senate.

Their appointment came after much pressure from lawmakers and other Nigerian elites demanding the removal of erstwhile security chiefs over rising insecurity in the country.

Confirming the appointment of the new service chiefs, Mr. Lawan called for inter-agency cooperation.

He enjoined the new security chiefs to improve the country’s security, adding that the lawmakers will continue to support the armed forces.

Mr. Lawan said: “We expect our Armed Forces to take the fight to the insurgents and bandits. There must be inter-agency cooperation, the Army, the Air Force must coordinate their activities.”

“We are in a very serious situation. The security situation must be improved and the buck is now going to stop on their table as far as operations are concerned. We in the Senate will continue to support our Armed Forces in whatever way is possible,” he added.

Ovie Omo-Agege, the Deputy Senate President during the plenary endorsed the appointment of the new service chiefs saying that he had no doubt that the best hands were appointed.

“I have no doubt that President Muhammadu Buhari has selected the very best men to pilot the military affairs. I wholeheartedly support these nominations,” Mr. Omo-Agege said.

The new service shiefs are Maj. Gen. Leo Irabor; Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim  Attahiru; Army, Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo; Navy, Air vice Marshal Isiaka O. Alao; Air Force.
