A Lagos-based lawyer, Festus Ogun, says he will withdraw the fundamental rights enforcement suit he filed against Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu after the latter agreed to unblock him on X (formerly Twitter).

Mr Ogun, who met with Mr Sanwo-Olu on Friday at Lagos House, Marina, told Peoples Gazette on Saturday that the governor personally assured him of the unblocking and directed his media aides to effect it.

“Before going for the meeting, I informed some sections of the media too and went with my lawyer,” Mr Ogun said. “We’ve made the bold statement already. The matter has become academic. The major objective is for me to be unblocked. Now that I have been unblocked, it makes the struggle a bit personal if I proceed.”

Mr Ogun later confirmed on Facebook that the governor had lifted the restriction.

“Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unblocked me on X (Twitter). I met briefly with him yesterday at Lagos House Marina, on his invitation, to amicably resolve my complaint of human rights violations. We will continue to hold authorities accountable, regardless. Aluta continua,” he wrote on Saturday night.

Mr Ogun had earlier sued Mr Sanwo-Olu for allegedly violating his right to freedom of expression after blocking him on the microblogging platform.

The development comes amid growing public debates on whether elected officials should be allowed to restrict constituents’ access on social media platforms.
