Manchester United faced a humiliating loss in the EFL Cup, being knocked out after losing on penalties for the first time in the club’s history, losing to fourth-tier side Grimsby Town.

A match that will go down in the history books as a struggle for Man United, who lost to League Two side Grimsby Town for the first time since 1931.

The fourth-division side stunned Ruben Amorim’s men at Blundell Park with two decisive goals from Charles Vernam, both created by Darragh Burns, who set up the Irishman to beat United’s defence. Former Manchester United player Tyrell Warren then doubled the advantage before half-time, capitalising on a dreadful error from André Onana after being set up by Vernam.

At the 76-minute mark, after the Reds utilised their attacking options, Bryan Mbeumo opened his account for the club with a composed finish, set up by Kobbie Mainoo and capped off by the Cameroonian international.

The top-flight side’s tough night continued, with several chances denied by Grimsby’s resolute defence, before Harry Maguire finally pulled one back near the end of normal time with a powerful header to force the game into penalties.

Both clubs were level after their first five penalties, with Matheus Cunha’s miss allowing Grimsby goalkeeper Pym to make a fine save. The Mariners then suffered a setback when Onana denied Clarke Oduor from the spot.

Despite Onana’s notable contribution, he could not prevent the shootout from dragging on as both sides converted relentlessly, even with the goalkeepers stepping up to take their turns.

At 10–10, United manager Ruben Amorim was dealt a huge blow when new winger Bryan Mbeumo struck the post, sending Grimsby through to the next round.

After a chaotic game, fans and supporters of the League Two side stormed the pitch at the 9,000-capacity Blundell Park, celebrating an incredible victory for the club.

The result further fuels the ‘Struggling United’ narrative, as the club suffered a humiliating loss despite investing over £200 million in the summer window to strengthen their attack and goal-scoring options.

The clash also marked the first United start for new striker Benjamin Šeško, following his transfer from RB Leipzig.

The Reds now hope for redemption as they play newly promoted side Burnley on Saturday.
