Charles Leclerc ignited Ferrari celebrations with a stunning victory at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, delivering a much-needed triumph for the Scuderia while McLaren faltered in its bid to top the Formula 1 championship.

The 26-year-old Monegasque driver secured his win with a 2.664-second lead over McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who had taken the lead on lap one from teammate Lando Norris. 

Ferrari’s bold strategy, which involved just one pit stop compared to McLaren’s two, proved decisive on the high-speed Monza circuit.

Norris, who had started from pole position, ended up third and now trails Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 62 points with eight races remaining. Verstappen finished sixth after struggling throughout the race.

Leclerc’s mastery of tire management, nursing a set of hard tires for 38 of the 53 laps, played a crucial role in his victory. His jubilant shout of “Mamma Mia, Mamma Mia” over the team radio as Italian football legend Alessandro Del Piero waved the chequered flag captured the essence of Ferrari’s triumph.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” said Leclerc, who celebrated his second win of the season. “I want to win Monza and Monaco every year, and I’ve managed to do so. It is so, so special.”

Leclerc, who won at Monza in 2019 and Monaco this year, was 11 seconds clear with seven laps to go and 8.3 seconds ahead with five remaining, buoyed by the roaring support of thousands of red-clad fans.

Piastri’s disappointment was palpable after a second pit stop on lap 39, following Norris’s stop on lap 32, hampered their strategy. Norris, who set the fastest lap, was left questioning the team’s tactics and priorities.

“We considered a one-stop strategy but couldn’t manage it due to tire graining,” Norris admitted. “We’re disappointed, but Ferrari drove a better race.”

McLaren now trails Red Bull by eight points, a significant drop from the 30-point gap they once had. Their race unravelled after Piastri’s aggressive move on Norris allowed Leclerc to pass, and subsequent strategy missteps left them with crucial questions.

Carlos Sainz finished fourth for Ferrari, with McLaren’s late charge overtaking him in the final laps. Seven-time world champion and future Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton secured fifth for Mercedes, while George Russell, who had a difficult start, finished seventh.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez took eighth, continuing a streak of disappointing results, and Alex Albon earned valuable points for Williams with a ninth-place finish. Franco Colapinto, making his debut for Williams, ended 12th, while Kevin Magnussen rounded out the top ten for Haas despite a 10-second penalty that will see him banned from the next race in Baku.
