A university lecturer, Dr Vincent Paul, has urged governments and institutions to prioritise policies that directly benefit citizens, particularly vulnerable Nigerians, to strengthen social protection systems.

Mr Paul, an entrepreneurial motivator and lecturer at the Nasarawa State University, Lafia, made the appeal in a statement on Friday to mark the International Day of Charity.

The day, inspired by Mother Teresa’s life and legacy, underscores compassion and selfless service to humanity. It reminds people of shared humanity beyond language, culture, and tradition.

Highlighting today’s challenges of conflict, inequality, and disasters, Mr Paul called on individuals to embrace compassion, give sincerely, and build inclusive communities where no one is left behind.

He also urged corporations to adopt corporate social responsibility as a duty, while communities and civil society must unite in solidarity to confront pressing challenges together.

â€śCharity is a bridge connecting despair with hope, suffering with relief, and isolation with community,” Mr Paul stressed, urging Nigerians to embrace kindness in daily life.

He noted that charity transcends religions, from Christianity and Islam to Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism, with each promoting service to others as a spiritual obligation.

According to him, charity in entrepreneurship extends beyond almsgiving, covering corporate social responsibility, social entrepreneurship, ethical business practices, and philanthropy, which all strengthen society.

He explained that workplace charity involves fair wages, accessible healthcare, welfare interventions, and volunteerism, which foster compassion and shared responsibility among staff and management.

Mr Paul praised the Nasarawa State University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sa’adatu Hassan-Liman, for demonstrating genuine care for staff and students, ensuring well-being while promoting positive societal contributions.

He also congratulated Muslims on Eid-el-Maulud, praying for the celebration to inspire unity, strengthen faith, and promote values that drive collective progress and development.
