Lekki Unrest: Lagos task force to prosecute 21 suspects

The Lagos task force says it will charge the 21 suspected perpetrators of the unrest that happened along the Lekki-Epe Expressway on Tuesday to court.
This is contained in a statement by Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, the spokesperson for the task force.
He quoted CSP Shola Jejeloye, the chairman of the force, to have said that the suspects were arrested during an unrest that occurred as a result of a crash involving a truck and a motorcycle at 12:00 p.m.
“Twenty-one people suspected to be connected with the mayhem had been arrested for breach of public peace and they will be charged accordingly,” Mr Jejeloye was quoted as saying in the statement.
Mr Jejeloye noted that the incident occurred at the second Lekki Tollgate, along the Chevron-Ajah, Lekki-Epe Expressway, killing a motorcycle rider and injuring one passenger.
“Eyewitnesses at the scene of the incident claimed that the rider drove against traffic before being rammed into by the moving truck. That led to hoodlums and miscreants setting the truck ablaze, causing commotion and transfer of aggression to innocent citizens along that axis,” he explained.
He added that the intervention of the task force and other security agents brought the situation under control and restored normalcy in the area.
Mr Jejeloye, however, urged motorists to exercise patience and be considerate while driving to avoid road mishap and unrests.
“A second’s patience can go a long way in saving a life. We should not be too quick or hasty to drag the right of way when driving because the person you are struggling with may probably not be in the right frame of mind at that moment,” he stressed. “Let us be considerate when driving.”
Mr Jejeloye also warned hoodlums who often fed fat on crises to refrain from unlawful conduct or face the wrath of the law.
The chairman further stated that the agency had impounded not less than 32 motorcycles for violating the state’s traffic laws on restriction of Okada on highways in that axis.
