LGBTQ+ Crackdown: Hungary passes constitutional amendment recognising only male, female gender

The Hungarian parliament on Monday passed a constitutional amendment mandating male and female as the only two recognised genders in Hungary.

The new law was supported by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party, which has a large majority in the parliament.

“The international gender network must take its hands off our children,” Mr. Orban said on Monday. “Now, with the change in America, the winds have shifted in our favour,” he added, referring to the re-election of Mr Trump as president.

A clause that guaranteed the protection of children’s “physical, mental and moral development” was also included in the amendment on gender, which reinforced a law passed last month that banned gay pride events as a danger to the welfare of youths.

The parliament also passed a constitutional amendment to allow the government to strip dual nationals of their Hungarian citizenship if they are deemed dangerous to the nation, which seems to be targeting Mr Orban’s most vocal critics who fled abroad and took second citizenship in another country.

The latest series of amendments made it the 15th time that Hungary has revised its Constitution since Mr Orban became prime minister in 2010, as the country gears up towards elections next year amid a growing opposition movement against the far-right leader.

Mr Orban, who has won four general elections in a row, said last month that the changes would be a “spring cleaning” to cleanse Hungarian politics of “stink bugs.”
